Wooden Art Nouveau. Gorokhovets. A house with mermaids
Location: Lenin St., 38
The house of the chairman of the zemstvo council, Fyodor Ksenofontovich Prishletsov, is called the house with mermaids in another way. It was built in the early 20th century in the neo—Russian style, a trend in architecture based on the use of traditions of ancient Russian architecture and folk art, as well as using elements of Byzantine architecture. This style was very organically integrated into the local carpentry art.
A wooden one-story mansion with a voluminous domed mezzanine will not leave anyone indifferent.
The tower of the building already refers us to the theme of legends about mermaids, the window frames are decorated with rich carvings, there are grape clusters, wild animals and flowers, beregini who protect the house from enemies. Gorokhovets master carpenters were so skilled that they even received a separate name and went down in history as "yakushey" — workers who worked in the village of Yakushevo, Gorokhovetsky district, Vladimir province.
The entrance from the street is decorated with a porch with an unusual roof, covered with a pattern of iron scales under tiles and topped with a carved spire. The domed four-pitched vault of the tower, towering on the same axis with the porch, is made in a similar style.
In 1919, the district-city cell of the Russian Communist Party (Bolsheviks) was located here, and now it's just an apartment building.
Visiting this place, you can admire the skill of Russian carpenters and carvers. To see and touch the warmth of a magical tree with your own eyes.
